Set us free, heavenly Father, from every bond of prejudice
and fear; that, honoring the steadfast courage of your
servant Absalom Jones, we may show forth in our lives the
reconciling love and true freedom of the children of God,
which you have given us in your Son our Savior Jesus Christ;
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,
now and forever. Amen.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

We write to invite you to the annual diocesan celebration of the life and ministry of Blessed Absalom Jones at the Philadelphia Cathedral on Saturday, February 7th, 2015 at 9:30 a.m.

The Right Reverend Michael Curry, D.Min., Bishop of North Carolina, will preach. Music for the festival will be offered by St. James School Choir, The Northeast High School Choir and the Absalom Jones Mass Choir.

This year, we are delighted that our Sister in Christ, Canon Jill P. Mathis, Canon for Transition Ministry, will be presented with the Absalom Jones Award in thanksgiving for her ministry to the People of the Diocese of Pennsylvania.  In her various roles in the ordination process, the deployment process, and Fresh Start, Jill has, for twenty-five years, been a welcoming, wise, and sustaining presence for virtually every clergy person in the diocese.

We hope all clergy who are able will vest in alb and festive stole and join us in honoring this woman who has ministered to our vocations.  Several churches of the diocese have donated funds for a reception in Jill’s honor following the Service.

Please bring members of your congregation and your ecumenical neighbors as well.  We are looking forward to a day of giving thanks to God for Blessed Absalom Jones and his life lived in witness to the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Faithfully,
